Hastings (Population 40,000) 20km South of Napier in the level, fertile land close to the Hawkes Bay Coast. It has many interesting examples of Art Deco and Spanish Missionary architecture. Hastings shared the same fate as Napier in the 1931 earthquake, the whole town was practically reduced to rubble and a similar rebuilding programme ensured.
The town has a number of attractions, including several wineries and the New Zealand Breweries and Hawkes Bay Brewery. It is a centre for agriculture, particularly orchards with fresh produce available at roadside stands around the town. |
